Alsip, Dunlevy, Hoelscher, Oakley Claim Kil-Kare Opener

by Jerry Wahl

Xenia, OH. (4/16) - After seeing the first two previous weeks season opener dates rained out, Kil-Kare Speedway finally got the 2009 season underway Friday night with a good car count and fans witnessing the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events.

The late models were the first event to hit the track for the season with Bobby Justus and Sam Heckman leading the field however Justus had problems so Justin Alsip took his spot with Alsip taking the lead with Ricky Bates running second Gary Estes coming from the tail to third and that is the way they finished. In the second heat Jeff Marsh and Virgil Powell started on the front row of the second heat. It was a five car run for the lead with Marsh hanging on to the lead with Bill Burba and Donnie Renner battling for third with Renner spinning on turn two on lap three. Marsh held on to the lead but Burba stole it with Powell slipping by for second. Unfortunately Burba spun on turn four on lap five in oil apparently dropped by Sloan Hendersons car which was actually a back-up car as she blew the engine in her #07 car. in hot laps. Burba was given his spot back and set the pace on the restart. At the checker it was Burba the winner followed by Powell, Tony Brunke and Tim Rauch.

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models were led to the green by Bobby Justus and Ricky Bates for their thirty lap feature. Justus powered into the lead with Bates and Justin Alsip third  but on the move on the outside was fast timer Gary Estes. Alsip  started to move around Justus with the caution coming out on lap four when Scott Drake tapped the wall. Justus had his hands full after the restart with Bates and Alsip battling and then Alsip went after Justus as Justus kept shaking him off. Jamie sites was running a smooth fourth as Estes got around as Alsip slipped by Justus for the lead and pulled away from Justus. Estes then went to work on third place Bates. The caution came out on lap nineteen when Sloan Henderrson slowed and stopped on the inside going into turn one. Alsip again set the pace on the restart with Estes getting around Bates for third and then  worked the outside of Justus as Justus kept shakinnghim off. Alsip took the win in his Valley View Chirophraic Clinic sponsored car with Justus second as Bates just nosed out Estes for third with Estes fourth and Sites was fifth.

In the 30 lap modified feature veteran drivers Dick Dunlevy Jr., and Mike Carroll brought the field to the green only to see three cars spin on the backstretch right after the drop of the green resulting in a complete restart. Dunlevy got the lead at the drop of the green with Carroll right behind with Greg Stap;eton in third right on Carrol's bumper with ryan Nuckles fourth. Dunlevy put some distance over the field as Stapleton continued to dig Carrol. Dunlevy continued to master the track only to see the pace slowed as Jamie Brenneman spun on turn two too bring out the caution with eight laps to go. Dunlevy brought his Dependable Roofing sponsored machine home first to claim the win with Carrol second and Stapleton a very close third with Nuckles fourth and Jack Jones fifth.

Jack Jones and Tyler Nuckles started on the front row of the first heat of modifieds with Jones got the lead with Nuckles challenging and then Mike Carroll joined the front two for a three way battle but when the checker waved it was Jones, Nuckles, and Carroll. Jamie Brenneman and Joe Jennings led the way to the green in the second heat with Brenneman showing the guys the way in the first lap but Caleb Reschar stole the lead on the next circuit. Former sport stock driver Mike South Jr. came from sixth to move into second with Brenneman dropping back to third. At the checker it was Reschar the winner trailed by South and Bill Burba.

The wild compacts were out for their feature with Ron Sagers and Jeff Kimes on the front row  and at the drop of the green Sagers jumped into the lead as Amber Sites battled with Kimes for second. Sites pulled ahead of Kimes to secure the second spot but fast timer Bo Hoelscher was rapidly moving up to fourth as the caution came out due to a spin. Hoelscher poured the pedal to the floor as he moved around Kimes and then battled Sites in a dog eat dog battle with Sites not willing to give up the spot only to see the caution fly for the second time. On the restart Hoelscher flew by Sites and then dropped out. Sagers lead was in jeopardy as Hoelscher really applied the pressure Sagers did not give up as he claimed the win with Hoelscher second with Joe Hoelscher third followed by Kimes and Paul Holley.

The IKO mini cups faced the green flag for their 25 lap feature with fast timer Cole Williams on the pole and Ryan Fleming alongside. Williams wasted little time in jumping out into the lead as Brandon Oakley in second with Fleming third and Bradley Stifler fourth. Williams lost the lead on lap eight as Oakley slipped by on the inside as they lapped slower cars. The caution flew on lap eleven and on the restart Oakley continued to lead with Williams not far behind. Lap seventeen saw hard charging Williams bump leader Oakley, spinning him on the backstretch. Williams was sent to the tail giving Fleming second the second spot Matthew Lawrence in third on the restart. Oakley then pulled away from the field as Williams was up to fourth when the yellow flew. Oakley stayed out front as Williams moved into second with two laps to go. Oakley took the win with Williams second trailed by Fleming, Lawrence, and Stiffler.
