Xenia' Scott Drake Tops at Kil-Kare

Xenia, OH (6/19) -  The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model feature was led to the green by Scott Drake and Justin Alsip with Drake taking the lead and Bobby Justus moving right up alongside of Alsip for second. Sloan Henderson shot from fifth to take third and set sail for the leaders ass he worked her way up behind second place running Justus. Ricky Bates then brought the first caution out when he looped it on turn three.

Heat winner Drake continued to set the pace but once again smoke rolled out of the Virgil Powell car with Powell again out of action. Drake appeared to have more horsepower as he put a little bit of distance over second place running Justus as Sloan continued to hold onto third with Sam Hickman fourth and Alsip trying to pass Heckman with Don Mahaffey then dropping under Alsip to take fifth. Drake was on cruise control as he toured the three-eights mile asphalt but the field was catching up on the second and third place cars. Xenia resident Drake took the win followed by Justus, Henderson for her best feature finish with Heckman fourth and Mahaffey fifth.

Scott Drake outpowered Justin Alsip on the first lap of the late model first heat to have his hands full all eight laps to keep Alsip behind as Drake scored his first heat win of the year. With Alsip second, Bobby Justus and Sloan Henderson were a close third and fourth. Virgil  Powell jumped into the lead of the second heat only to see smoke trail from his Estes Oil machine and Powell disappearing to the pits. Don Mahaffey inherited the lead to capture his first win of the year with Jamie Sites second trailed by Jeff Marsh and Rick Buehl.

Jack Jones jumped out front in the thirty lap Muffler Brothers of Xenia modified feature with Ralph Harrod second only to have Jason Mahaffey take the point. Mike Carroll went to work on the outside to put the pressure on Harrod just as the caution came out when Jamie Brenneman spun on turn four. Jones continued to set sail after the restart as he put some distance over the field. Second place running Mahaffey got a little squirmy on lap nine to slip back to fourth. This gave Carroll an open shot to catch up with Jones as Carroll went to the outside to try for a pass. Back in the pack Dick Dun and fast timer Jerry Stapleton were running side by side with Dun taking the fifth spot.

Lap after lap Carroll tried to no avail to pass Jones as Dun moved up on the rear bumper of Derek Barnett. Harrods was riding a safe third as there was distance between he and the front runners and the fourth and fifth place cars. Meanwhile Jones had his hands full as Carroll was still trying for the front spot with only two laps to go. Jones, of Beavercreek held on to the front spot to take took the win by four feet over Carroll in a crowd pleasing finish for his fourth win of the year. Third went to Ralph Harrods with Stapleton fourth and Mahaffey fifth.

In modified heat racing Jack Jones captured his second win of the year as he led Ralph Harrods who displaced Jason Mahaffey for second with Mahaffey third and Mike Carroll fourth. Dick Dun came from the tail to capture his second heat win of the year. Second went to Rodney Crouch, followed by early leader Joe Jennings with Jamie Brinkman.

Veteran drivers Mike South Sr. and Ron Lewis started on the front row of the sport stock feature as they faced starter Mike Stapleton's green flag as the two ran side by side with South just barely ahead on the first lap as fast timer Steve Foster in his first visit to Kill-Kara this year was in a heated battle with Derrick Louder but Foster's  luck ran out as the left rear tire peeled off the rim on turn four as he and Louder made contact.

Gary Sites brought the caution out as he spun on turn four but fortunate for Steve foster the event reverted back to the last completed lap and here came Foster out of the pits to restart on the tail on the same lap. Three time feature winner Shawn Stan was out of action on lap five with mechanical woes and in the meantime Foster was flying, moving up to fourth and was setting his sites on the front runners. Sites again brought the caution back out on lap eleven as he spun on turn four leaving liquid on the track as he departed to the pits.

With nine laps to go the fans were in for a showdown between leader South, Lewis, Jeff Marsh, and the fast moving Foster. Lewis made a move under South to take the lead with Foster moving into second and then Foster moved up on the rear bumper of Lewis. Lewis was able to hold off foster to take his second win of the year with Foster a very close second. third was Derrick Louder, Jeff Marsh was fourth and Travis Diggers fifth.

The ICON Mini cups made their fifth stop at Kill-Kara with seventeen cars and young drivers on hand. Courtney Hannah and Cole Williams led the pack to the green with Hannah taking the lead but fast timer brandon Oakley shot into the first place spot with Hannah second and Williams third. Travis Page moved up to fourth with  Matthew Lawrence in fifth. Oakley weeded his way through slower traffic as Hannah and  Williams did the same but Hannah got shuffled back to sixth. A three car mix-up on lap eleven slowed the pace enabling the field to bunch up. Oakley again set sail but unfortunately Austin Johnson spun on the frontstretch and with no where to go Oakley slid sideways into the front of Johnson's car with both cars knocked out of action.

For Williams it was a lucky break as he inherited the lead with Page second followed by Bradley Stiffler, Hannah, and Lorance as the top five. Williams was looking for his third straight win as Page was trying to close the gap but it was Williams taking the win with Page second followed by Stiffler, Hannah, and Ryan Fleming.

Rounding out the nights action was the compacts with Joseph Mansfield and Paul Holley leading the pack with Mansfield showing as the leader and then here came former track champ Tim Haerr from fifth to second to chase Holley, Bo Hoelscher took over third with five time winner Ronald Sagers advancing to fourth with Bryan Lynch challenging  Sagers to take fourth. Fast timer Haerr held the lead at the halfway as Holley and Hoelscher sorta bumped with Holley falling all the way back to fifth. Haerr had a half lap lead over the field but a heated three car battle was going on between Hoelscher, Sagers, and Lynch.

with three laps to go Amber Sites brought the caution out when she spun on turn four which let Sagers to move up on Haerr's rear bumper for the restart. Haerr held on to claim his first feature win of the year followed by Sagers, Hoelscher, Lynch, and Holley.

Next Friday, June 26, the IKO Mini Cups will join the NASCAR whelen All-American Series late models, modifieds, sport stocks, and compacts with racing starting at 8 p.m.
