Drake Makes It Two In A Row At Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH.- Although the temperature may have been on the warm side so was the racing action Friday night at Kil-Kare Speedway for the NASCAR Whelen Al-American Series events. Virgil Powell and Jeff Marsh brought the field to the green in the NASCAR All-American Series late model feature with Powell taking the lead with Scott Drake into second with Justin Alsip right behind him. Drake made and inside pass on Powell on lap three to take the lead with Alsip in tow as Don Mahaffey slipped into third with Sam Heckman in to fourth, Bobby Justus fifth, and Ricky Bates running sixth. Powell brought the caution out on lap eight as he spun on turn four after contact with Jeff Marsh. After that it was green flag racing to the checker. Back in the pack fast timer Sloan Henderson was working on the back end of Ricky Bates machine as she tried lap after lap to make a pass but Bates kept shaking her off. Drake, looking for his second straight win led on the restart as Mahaffey slipped under Alsip for second. With five laps to go it was still Drake the leader followed by Mahaffey, Alsip, Heckman, Justus, bates, and Sloan Henderson to cross the line in that order followed by Jamie Sites, and Jeff Marsh with Virgil Powell tenth. The first heat of late models had Sam Heckman and Don Mahaffey on the front row as they ran side by side until Bobby Justus spun bringing out the caution putting the field single file for the restart with Heckman in front. Heckman continued to lead for his first heat win of the year. Mahaffey was second with fast timer Sloan Henderson a close third with Ricky Bates fourth. It was Virgil Powell and Jeff Marsh in the front row of the second heat with Powell taking the lead with Scott Drake a close second and tail starter Justin Alsip moving up to challenge Drake. Alsip took over second and then went after Powell but it was Powell taking the win with Alsip second, Drake third, and Jamie Sites fourth. The Muffler Brothers of Xenia modifieds had Joe Jennings and heat winner Jamie Brenneman leading the field to the green flag for thirty laps of racing with Jennings taking the lead followed by Caleb Reschar and Ralph Harrod and Jason Mahaffey, Reschar made an inside pass on turn one and then Mahaffey did the same to Reschar on turn one. Then here came tail starter Dick Dunlevy moving into third only to see the caution come out involving Jack Jones, Rodney Kreusch, and Jamie Brenneman with Brenneman and Jones out of competition.Reverting back a lap this put Dunlevy back to fourth for the restart. Dunlevy quickly reclaimed third and then went after front running Mahaffey and Derek Barnette. Dunlevy put Barnette back to third on lap seventeen and then had his sights on leader Mahaffey. Meanwhile Mike Carroll was trying to advance. Dunlevy then cruised by leader Mahaffey to take the lead as Barnette, Jerry Stapleton and Carroll were fighting for position as the caution came out with five laps to go. Dunlevy and his Dependable Roofing had little trouble holding the lead to take his second feature win of the year. Mahaffey was second as Barnette just barely beat Carroll for fourth and fifth was Ralph Harrod. Mike Carroll jumped into the lead of the first heat of modifieds with Jason Mahaffey riding second followed by Jack Jones. Carroll claimed his first heat win of the year with Jones second, Mahaffey third and fast timer Jerry Stapleton fourth. It was Joe Jennings along with Jamie Brenneman on the front row of the second heat with Jennings out powering Brenneman for the lead with Caleb Reschar third but a determined Brenneman took the front spot as Ralph Harrod moved into third. Brenneman scored her first heat win of the year as she led Reschar, Harrod and Rodney Kreusch to the checker. Leading the field in the sport stock feature was Derrick Louderbach and Chris Boggs with Louderbach taking the lead as Jeff Marsh moved into second with previous weeks winner Ron Lewis third as Boggs bobbled on the frontstretch and parked in the infield. It was a three car battle for second as fast timer Shawn Stansell was on the move as he passed both Lewis and Marsh and then sailed around Louderbach for the lead as he was in pursuit of his fourth win of the year and that is just what he did in his Rogers Auto Service machine. with five laps to go Mike South Sr. spun letting the field to bunch up. Lewis was riding second with Louderbach third as the laps wound down as Stansell claimed the win with Lewis second, Louderbach third, Jeff Marsh fourth and Travis Digges fifth. The wild compacts saw Paul Holley take the lead in their feature as Ron Sagers advanced up to challenge Holley, taking the lead on lap seven but Holey bounced right back to take the lead as the two ran door to door lap after lap alas they swapped the lead. Back in the field Dave Sagers was running third until Bo Hoelscher displaced him for that spot.. Out of nowhere came fast timer Bryan Lynch to move into third and then he passed Hoelscher for third and then when the checker waved on winner Ron Sagers it was Lynch, Hoelscher, Holley, and Dave Sagers in the top five. The first of two Steve Smith Memorial IKO Mini Cup features had seventeen cars starting with Courtney Hannah and Brandon Oakley in the front row. Oakley took the lead on the first lap as Travis Page and Casey Willingham battled for fourth. Fast timer Cole Williams rode he rear bumper of Willingham as the caution came out on lap nine. It was still Oakley and Hannah the two front runners for the restart with Williams making his pass good for fourth and then closed in on Page as Oakley continued to set sail. Oakley took the win, his second of the year in the Oakley blacktop special. Hannah was second followed by Travis Page, Cole Williams, and Casey Willingham rounding out the top five. The second feature had Matthew Lawrence and Bradley Stiffler on the front row Casey Willingham jumping into the lead but the caution came out calling for a complete restart. It was a mad scramble three car wide run for the lead with Willingham again out front with Travis Page running second and fast timer Cole Williams third and first feature winner Brandon Oakley fourth but it was Oakley really on the move as he claimed second spot and then challenged Willingham for the lead. Lap ten saw Oakley the leader as he started to pull away from the field. The top four ran very close together and when the checker waved it was Oakley the winner followed by Willingham, Williams, Page, and Hannah. Friday night, July 3 will see Independence Day Championships with the late models and modifieds running a fifty lap features with the sport stocks, and compact all seeing action with racing at 8 p. m..
