Tim Ice Claims Carter Lumber Main Event at Kil-Kare
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH - The Main Event Racing Series (MERS) made their first of two 2009 visits to Kil-Kare Speedway and it was winning the Carter Lumber 100 lap event and the $2,500 pay check.
Twenty four super late models lined up for the start of the century grind with Tim Ice and Jimmy Carter leading the pack to the green with Ice in the Fast Racing Engines sponsored machine taking the lead however the first caution came out on lap two to slow the field when John Crumrine and John Sandquist tangled on turn one and were out of competition. Ice set sail again as Don Mahaffey shot around Donnie Hill for third as the field stated to move up on slower cars Ice began lapping cars while Dick Dunlevy went to work on Hill for filth but ahead of him Shawn Stroble took over third from Mahaffey and then Stroble dropped Carter to third as he stole second spot. Drew Charlson brought the caution out on lap twenty seven when he spun on turn two. For the restart it was Ice the leader followed by Stroble, Carter, Mahaffey, and Dunlevy. The first six cars were running bumper to bumper with sixth place running Hill trying the inside of Dunlevy for fifth as they ran side by side behind Mahaffey, Ice continued to lead as he pulled away from Stroble as they moved through lapped traffic and then here came Rich Rohrer out of nowhere to claim fourth with his sights on the front runners but lap forty four brought the third caution out when five cars piled up on the frontstretch bringing the red flag out. Unfortunately Rohrer was involved and out of action. For the restart it was Ice, Stroble, Carter, Dunlevy and now Doug Summers in fifth. Dunlevy went to the topside as he tried to catch carter but Carter shook him off as Ice continued to hold the front spot. At the halfway it was Stroble, Carter, Dunlevy, Doug Summers, Jamie Hunt, Drew Charlson, Glenn Gault, Gary Whipkey and Don Mahaffey. Ice was really hooked up as he continued to put quite a distance on the second place running Stroble who had about an equal distance over third place running Carter and the same for Dunlevy in fourth. By lap seventy Ice had a half lap lead and was still pulling away as Stroble, Carter, and Dunlevy had bunched up bumper to bumper with Carter trying the inside of Stroble when the caution came out on lap seventy nine. Carter stayed glued to Ice's rear bumper after the restart with Dunlevy in third and Stroble riding fourth with Summers right behind him. With ten laps to go Ice again was starting to pull away from Carter as Dunlevy still held on to third but Summers was closing in on Stroble. As the laps wound down Ice showed he definitely was on a mission as he led every lap of the hundred lapper to take the win over Carter, Dunlevy, Stroble, and Summers.
Caleb Reschar and Rodney Kreusch started on the front row of the Muffler Brothers of Xenia thirty lap feature with Reschar taking charge with Greg Stapleton in second followed by Ralph Harrod and seventh place starter Tyler Nuckles with his uncle Dick Dunlevy fifth. Stapleton went to work on Reschar taking the outside route to pull alongside of Reschar as Dunlevy slipped under Nuckles to fourth and right after the pass Nuckles spun coming out of turn four, bringing out the first caution. On the seven lap restart it was still Reschar out front with Stapleton riding second and then here came Dunlevy on the outside to challenge Harrod for third as Stapleton again pulled alongside of Reschar and moved out front out of turn four on lap thirteen with Dunlevy also passing Reschar to move up on the leader. Meanwhile Jerry Stapleton after his encounter with Nuckles he was working his way from the tail to take fifth on lap nineteen. Greg Stapleton put some distance over second running Dunlevy as Jerry Stapleton lost traction on turn one on the first turn to bring out the second caution. Again it was Greg Stapleton holding the lead on the restart with Nuckles moving around Reschar for third with Harrod running fifth behind Reschar. Greg Stapleton, in the Stapleton Machine and Tool sponsored car had a ten car length win over Dunlevy with Nuckles, Reschar and Harrod finishing in that order. Thirteen Kil-Kare sport stocks faced the green flag in their twenty five lap feature with Jeff Marsh and Phil Gussler bringing the field to the green as Gussler took the lead with Marsh second and Mike South Jr. third. Fourth place running George Lindsey moved up to challenge South as Shawn Stansell advanced from eighth to fifth. It was Lindsey pulling alongside South to challenge for fourth but it was Stansell slipping by in traffic to steal fourth and set sail for Marsh. Lindsey had other ideas as he slipped by Stansell for third and then went to work on Marsh taking second on lap sixteen. Gussler enjoyed the lead but Gussler was catching up on him as the laps ran down when the caution came out on lap twenty setting up a shoot out for the win. And a shoot out it was for a moment on the restart but Gussler slowed suddenly and dropped out with Lindsey setting sail only to see the caution come out with two laps to go as John Haney spun off the track on the backstretch, Lindsey held the front spot to claim his first feature win of the year at Kil-Kare in his Bob's Locksmith special. Shawn Stansell was second followed by Jeff Marsh, Travis Digges, and Mike South Jr. Ronald Sagers took the lead of the compacts in their feature as Joseph Mansfield held on to second as the Hoelscherr's raced side by side with Bo taking third and Joe fourth followed by Aaron harshbarger. Harshbarger took over third as Sagers enjoyed a comfortable lead, leaving the pack behind him as he began to lap cars. Bo Hoelscher came on strong in the closing laps to take over second with Harshbarger dropping back. Sagers took the win, his fourth of the year followed by Bo Hoelscher, Bryan Lynch, Joe Hoelscher, and Amber Sites.
